Machine Embroidery -as opposed to hand embroidery
A term that can be used to describe a specially designed, computerised, embroidery or sewing-embroidery machine that automatically stitches a design from a pre-made pattern that is turned into a specialised reader and then input into the machine.
In 1980, the first computer graphics embroidery design system was introduced, running on a mini-computer.
Technology was then enhanced in 1982 with the introduction of the first multi-user system that allowed more than one person to be working on a different part of the embroidery process, vastly streamlining production times which meant greater productivity and therefore a bigger slice of the pie.
Object oriented programming was used to incorporate drawing design into software while the second & subsequent releases made drawing more intuitive for the artist and designer.
Some graphics programmes like Corel and Wilcom have the facility to transfer the design to a digitised format.
Computerised machine embroidery has rapidly grown in popularity since the late 1990s.
Shirts and Caps stitch out differently, Shirts are usually a Left to Right movement where as Caps usually start at a centre point and go left and then come back and go right so as to not ‘pucker’ the cap fabric.
Many machine manufacturers sell their own lines of embroidery designs/patterns for those who don’t want to create their own and in addition, many individuals and independent companies also either sell or prepare embroidery designs both on and off shore.
The embroidery patterns can be transferred to the computerised embroidery machines in a variety of ways, either through cables, CDs, floppy disks (if you can remember these?), special cards and now wireless.
Different machines use different methods and design file formats.
The commercial format .dst (Tajima) is also very popular while .emb format Masters can be altered.
The design files are typically downloaded to a computer and then transferred to an embroidery machine which can then be used to stitch out the embroidery designs. Read more>>
